Why volunteer?
"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others" - Mahatma Gandhi
"Volunteers don't get paid, not because they're worthless, but because they're priceless." - Sherry Anderson, writer.
Broomhill Community Library is run by an amazing team of volunteers who are essential to keep the library open - both in terms of staffing and providing the library service but also in the background as Trustees that run the charity, activity leaders, events planners, fund-raisers, administrators, wellbeing and heritage ambassadors.
Do you have a few hours a week to help support BCL?
There are so many ways to contribute as a volunteer. Volunteering at BCL is fun, rewarding, and great way to meet new people. Our volunteers include university students, parents, empty-nesters, and retirees. Each brings their unique set of skills and life experiences to support the library. We have long- and short-term opportunities, including project work, and will work with you to find the best fit for your interests and availability.
With your help, we will continue to provide community activities and events that promote life long learning, wellbeing and heritage and encourage community connection for all.
If you'd like to find out more, please complete this online form and we'll be back in contact with you soon.
Current openings
Social Media Coordinator
We seek volunteers with social media experience to help create channel specific content, provide data analysis, and work with our Communications manager to develop our social media strategy.
As a member of the Communications group, you'll be involved in promoting the library's events and activities effectively.
This is an ideal opportunity for university students seeking to gain work experience, as well as individuals who have prior experience in this area.
Digital Fundraisers
We seek volunteers who can consult and advise on our digital fundraising strategy. If you have experience and good ideas, we'd like to hear from you!
Graphic Designers
Do you have a flair for graphic design? We are looking for volunteers to help us produce engaging and impactful online and hardcopy materials to promote the library's events and programmes. You'll use the library's established branding guidelines as a reference. Prior experience with Canva or similar tools is a plus.
All Volunteer Opportunities
Activity Leaders
We are looking for people with creative ability to offer their time to prepare and run Crafternoon sessions. Prior sessions have included watercolours, origami, painting, drawing, and arts and crafts.
Children's Activity Helper
Do you enjoy helping children to create and craft? Or do you like reading to children? We have lots of occasions when we could use your skills. We need people who are able to get on well with children, have experience of working with children and who show a desire to lead a group or assist with a session on a regular basis. Training will be given if needed. As part of the children's activities team, a DBS will be applied for and you will need to read and agree to work according to BCL safeguarding policies.
Heritage ambassador
Do you have an interest or expertise in garden design history or architecture? We are looking for people to help develop and nurture the heritage gardens and building.
Wellbeing ambassador
Are you enthusiastic about health and wellbeing and like the idea of coming alongside people in support to help them improve their wellbeing? Then we would love to hear from you.
DIY - Handy women and men
We often have small maintenance projects that crop up - minor repairs, decorating, joinery, putting up shelves, and generally fixing things. This volunteer position would suit someone with previous trade and/or substantial DIY experience and interest, including an understanding of health and safety issues. No technical or professional qualifications are required.
Our library building is maintained by Sheffield City Council contractors, and volunteers would need to have the flexibility to meet and liaise with contractors and council staff during library opening hours.
Event catering
We often run events with refreshments and homemade cakes as fundraisers. If you love to bake, organise the kitchen or just love making a cuppa, we'd love to hear from you.
ICT and website
There's lots of tech for us to manage at BCL as we are always wanting to promote our services to a wide audience. If you are tech savvy, committed to help and can offer time and advice. Read more HERE.
Marketing
Are you able to help with our external marketing and communications? Or our social media profile? Then we would love to hear from you.
Heritage Garden volunteers
We have lots of gardening projects on the go, so if you'd like to take part with a team of other enthusiasts to help keep the gardens looking beautiful, click here for further details
Library Assistants
Our volunteer Library Assistants are the face of the library! Library Assistants answer questions from the public about library membership, books, on-line information, and library events and activities. You'll need to be generally computer literate, feel comfortable learning to use our Library Management System and assisting people with general questions about the use of library computers. Training will be provided! You'll also help with finding, sorting, and displaying our book stock.
This is an ideal position for people who enjoy working as a team member in a customer-focused service environment
Library Assistants are expected to commit to a regular weekly or fortnightly session, but we can work with you to find a schedule that works best.
