We're Celebrating 10-years of Volunteer-Run Libraries in Sheffield

On Thursday, 26th September, a group of volunteers from Broomhill Community Library attended the 10th anniversary celebration event of Volunteer Libraries in Sheffield. Representatives from each of the 16 volunteer libraries across the city were thanked for their success and for the many contributions to their communities over the last decade.

During the event, Judith Pitchforth, Chair of Broomhill Community Trust which oversees the running of the library, was asked to share her thoughts about being a library volunteer. You can read Judith's remarks here.

Please enjoy this video celebrating the ten-year anniversary of volunteer-run libraries in Sheffield.

This BBC article from September 4th, discusses how volunteer libraries have evolved into community hubs, with a focus on Sheffield libraries and an interview with Judith Pitchforth.

Author Event - "Vital Capacity" by Rob Primhak

Friday, 8th November, 19:00 - 21:00

What makes a man abandon his family, and his successful professional career for the goldfields of Australia?

John Hutchinson left the coalfield of 19th Century Tyneside to become a surgeon, a physician, and a pioneer of chest medicine. His research on lung capacity using a machine of his own invention received international acclaim. He has been called the first respiratory

epidemiologist. And then, just as the pinnacle of professional success was within his

reach, he cast it all aside and travelled to Australia as a ship’s surgeon.

Artist, sculptor, musician and engineer, Hutchinson was a man of many parts and his design for a spirometer survived until modern times, as did his term for maximum breathable air: ‘Vital Capacity’. In this book, a renowned respiratory specialist explores the life and times of John Hutchinson, including some crucial contemporary misconceptions about the causes of disease.

Dr Rob Primhak, MD, FRCPCH, MBBS, FERS, BA(Hons) worked for nearly forty years as a paediatrician, specialising in chest disease. He was President of the British Paediatric Respiratory Society and Director of Assessment Director of the European Respiratory Society. His interest in John Hutchinson stems from his own doctoral research on spirometry.
