"The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others" - Mahatma Gandhi
Broomhill Community Library is powered by people like you.
Our library stays open and thriving thanks to an incredible team of volunteers. Our volunteers come from different backgrounds and experiences, each bringing their own skills, passions, and life experiences to help the library flourish.
There’s a role for everyone.
Whether you have a knack for organising, love chatting with visitors, enjoy creative projects, or simply want to give something back. Whatever your skill, we’ll help you find a role that matches your interests and availability. We provide all the support you’ll need. We ask for a minimum commitment of six months, although shorter-term projects may pop up from time to time.
Together, we can keep Broomhill Community Library a vibrant hub for lifelong learning, wellbeing, heritage, and connection — for everyone in our community.

Volunteer Opportunities
Join Our Communications Group and help tell the Library’s story
Our Communications Group is the voice of Broomhill Community Library. We handle all the marketing and promotion for our activities and events — online and in print. One of our key goals? Building a stronger online community to boost engagement with the library.
Our volunteer team brings together people with skills in digital content creation, social media, website design, graphic design, and communications. We work remotely most of the time but stay connected through regular in-person catch-ups and a WhatsApp group — always ready to cover for each other when needed.
We currently use a range of tools, including Canva and Google Suite, and we continue to explore new ways to become a more engaging online community.
We’d especially love to hear from prospective volunteers with experience in social media, graphic design, or digital communications — and a passion for helping our library grow and connect with more people.
Share Your Skills — Inspire Your Community as an Activity Leader or Helper.
Broomhill Community Library is a hub of creativity and connection, offering a wide range of regular activities for adults and children. We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join us as Adult Activity Leaders/Helpers and Children’s Activity Leaders/Helpers.
Adult Activity Leaders & Helpers
We love to run a wide range adult activities for all the community, from crafts, writing, painting, and gardening. We’d love to hear from volunteers who can plan and lead sessions, bringing fresh ideas and hands-on inspiration for our participants, and from helpers who can provide support.
Children’s Activity Leaders & Helpers
If you enjoy helping children make and create, or reading stories that spark their imagination, this could be the perfect role for you. We’re looking for volunteers who have some experience working with children and would like to either lead a group or assist regularly in our sessions. We provide support where needed and guidance to follow our safeguarding policies.
Come share your talents, inspire others, and help us keep the library a place where creativity and learning flourish.
Become a Library Ambassador to promote Learning, Heritage, and Wellbeing.
At Broomhill Community Trust, our mission is to enrich community life through Learning, Heritage, and Wellbeing.
As a Library Ambassador, you'll join a welcoming team of like-minded people who share your commitment to making a difference. Together, you'll help turn our mission into reality - one event, one conversation, and one connection at a time.
We’re especially looking for volunteers who can help us create and run events and activities that:
Spark lifelong learning - encouraging curiousity, new skills, and fresh ideas
Celebrate our cultural richness - honouring the stories, history, and heritage that make us unique
Inspire wellbeing - supporting others on their journeys to better health and wellbeing
Connect it all together - weaving learning, heritage, and wellbeing into experiences that bring our community together
If you have knowledge to share, enthusiasm to give, and a passion for building community connections, this is your chance to make a real difference.
Be a volunteer for the everyday work that makes an extraordinary impact
Every single volunteer at Broomhill Community Library plays a vital role in keeping things running smoothly. From front-desk welcomes to behind-the-scenes skills, these opportunities are essential to our ability to provide great library services.
Children's and Adult Library Assistants
As a Library Assistant, you’re the friendly face visitors meet when they walk through our doors; answering questions about memberships, books, online resources, and events. You'll work either downstairs in the adult library or upstairs in the children's library. You’ll also help find, sort, and display books, and assist with library computers. Training is provided — you just need to be comfortable with basic computer use and enjoy working with people. We ask for a regular weekly or fortnightly session, and will work with you to find a schedule that fits.
Catering for events
From coffee mornings to community fundraisers, refreshments help bring people together. If you enjoy baking, organising a kitchen, or simply making a good cuppa, this role is perfect for you.
DIY - Handy women and men
Small repairs and creative fixes keep our space welcoming. If you have experience in DIY — whether it’s decorating, joinery, putting up shelves, or general maintenance — we’d love your help. An understanding of health and safety is important, but no professional qualifications are required. You may also liaise with Sheffield City Council contractors during library hours for building-related work.
Heritage Garden Volunteers
Love gardening? Join our team of green-fingered volunteers to keep our heritage gardens looking beautiful. Tasks include grass and hedge cutting, planting, preparing beds, and clearing overgrown areas. It’s a hands-on role that keeps our outdoor spaces as welcoming as our indoor ones.
ICT Support
Our library runs on more than just books — we have public and staff computers, printers, a copier, and other tech to keep in working order. We’re looking for tech-savvy volunteers who can help with updates, upgrades, and troubleshooting. If you can spare time and advice, we’d love your expertise.
Other roles
There are a range of 'behind the scenes" roles in the areas of volunteer management, governance, health and safety, safeguarding, building and operations. Please indicate your areas of interest on the online application form.
