Valuing Heritage
We offer activities and organise events that celebrate the heritage of our library building and garden, and provide opportunities for members of our community to celebrate and share their unique heritage with others.
We are committed to restoring and preserving our Heritage Garden so that it may be enjoyed by this and future generations.
Our development plans balance the library building changes that are required to meet the needs of the community and the preservation of historical features and integratration of the Heritage Garden.
This gem of a garden was created in the late 1920’s by famous landscape designer Percy Cane for steel magnate Arthur Lee. In 1957 the house became a branch library when it was taken over by Sheffield City Council. Unfortunately it all fell into neglect after the original York paving was stolen in 2003.
In 2015, volunteers set about clearing the mass of self-sown trees, bramble and ivy. Steps, paths and water features eventually emerged. The restoration work continues and our vision is to make the garden a more integral part of our community space.
In 2024, our garden was added to the South Yorkshire Heritage List.
We offer activities and plan events which recognise and celebrate the unique heritage of our members and visitors.
In early summer, the Welcoming Cultures Picnic invites members of our community to showcase their heritage by sharing traditional dishes and offering opportunities to experience the music, words, and art of their culture.
Regular activities such as Coffee, Cake, and Chat, and Tea, Talk, and Tots provide a space for newcomers to Broomhill to make friends and improve their English.
During Heritage Open Days in September, we organise tours, talks, and activities to help educate visitors about our garden and its plants, to take a guided local history walk along Taptonville Road, and to learn more about the heritage of our area.
Here are just some of the many events and activities we offered during Heritage Open Days in September 2024.
